Penske Automotive Technician Team Lead - Mercedes-Benz of Chandler in Chandler, Arizona

Summary/Objective

The Tech Team Lead is a producing technician that provides direction, leadership and technical expertise to all other shop personnel. This position is primarily responsible for directing work activities of other employees to meet production and quality goals established by management and is responsible for leading all shop activities in the absence of manager or supervisor.

Essential Functions

  • Establishes good working relationships with customers to encourage repeat and referral business.

  • Directs and schedules the work of the Service Technicians

  • Monitors daily productivity reports and corresponding payroll record

  • Acts as a player/coach, required to perform the duties of the Service Technicians as required to ensure departmental goals are met

  • Responsible for the efficient diagnosis, repair, and replacement of general automotive parts and accessories. A lead Technician will conduct a wide variety of diagnoses and repairs; including but not limited to brakes, drivability, emissions, steering/suspension, electrical, state safety and emissions testing, maintenance services, HVAC, major engine and hydraulics

  • Possesses advanced knowledge and advanced troubleshooting skills to resolve complex repairs.

  • Shop responsibilities will include scheduling repairs and maintenance, maintaining parts and supply inventories and negotiating with local Vendors, Dealers and sublet repair facilities for compliance.

  • Maintains all shop tools to ensure they are current in service, repair and relative. Will be able to identify the shop tool needs and communicate with leadership.

  • Responsible managing and directing a small staff of Technicians, including by not limited to: training compliance for shop personnel, monitor and obtain HR compliance with PTO, PVO holidays, time cards.

  • Ensures all SOP's are implemented at the shop to ensure compliance with Company standards. Maintain shop morale through appropriate distribution of work and by providing technical expertise and effective guidance and coaching to other shop employees. Act as primary assistant to manager or supervisor in assigning and directing the work of shop employees.

  • Assists with inventory management and ensures that all shop equipment, supplies and tools are in good, clean working order at all times.

  • Report theft, damage, or any/all safety concerns to management.

  • Visibly demonstrate safety commitment by following all safety and health procedures and modeling the behaviors related to such. Work in cooperation with safety leadership in support of all safety activities aligned with Safety Excellence. Lead responsibility for safety, compliance with OSHA, EPA and all local codes in conjunction with shop manager.

  • Works with manager to review work volumes, plan and continuously monitor staffing levels to ensure efficiency, quality work product, and effective customer service; review departmental performance against key performance indicators and metrics and develop and execute strategies for improvement.

  • Performs quality control checks on all work; notify immediate supervision of exceptional or unsatisfactory work, employee-related problems or other factors hindering work accomplishment.

  • Orient, train and instruct employees regarding job functions/tasks expected of them, when needed.

  • Maintains high-quality service repairs and minimizes comebacks

  • Conducts periodic spot checks of completed jobs for thoroughness and quality

  • Keeps abreast of new equipment and tools available and recommends purchases

  • Establishes and maintains good working relationships with vocational and technical schools to enhance personnel recruitment activities

  • Serves as liaison with factory representatives

  • Establishes and maintains good working relationships with other departments

  • Understands, keeps abreast of, and complies with federal, state, and local regulations that impact the company's business

  • Facilitates and/or conducts training on proper techniques, policies, regulations, and best practices and recommends employees to appropriate training as needed

  • Understands and follows work rules and procedures

  • Follows all attendance and punctuality standards with adherences to timekeeping standards including recording time of arrival, departure and all breaks for self and subordinates.

  • Directs and schedules the work of the technicians.

  • Monitors daily productivity reports and corresponding payroll record

  • Acts as a player/coach, required to perform the duties of the technicians as required to ensure goals are met

  • Follows lawful directions from supervisors

  • Upholds the company's non-disclosure and confidentiality policies and agreements

  • Attends company meetings as required

  • Maintains a professional appearance and a neat work area for self and subordinates.

  • Other duties as assigned
